For some reason, Victor finds himself in an alternate dimension. Like the TV show Sliders, he can't find his way back, and must keep traveling forward through dimensions trying to find the one he left.
The only thing that's the same in every dimension is that he arrives close enough to be able to find the Yuuri of that dimension. Sometimes, they're married! Sometimes, they haven't met yet! Sometimes, whatever is different between Victor's dimension and Yuuri's renders them incomprehensibly strange to each other! But, no matter what, they're always somehow compelled to want to know and even love each other.
Victor can't stay in any one dimension - he'd never make it home. But sometimes... he's tempted. Some of the Yuuris are really very sweet, and the differences manageable. But then he'd never make it home, to where his Yuuri is waiting for him.
While I'd love to wring as much angst out of it as possible tbh, there's plenty of room for fun along the way. Maybe in one universe, everyone has a twin? Or there's zombies? Or they've evolved tentacles? Or they go into heat? I love tropes, and there's plenty of room for them.
