Yuri was both relieved and taken aback when he finally rested in his cell. For one he had believed that prison cells were more private more like rooms with heavy locks and doors made of iron. But at the same time he had thought there would be like ten inmates in a single cell that was more like a cage and with nothing but a little plank to sleep on. To be fair Yuri had not had the slightest idea about how a prison actually looked from the inside and the reality was different from the many false images he had entertained, mainly following what movies and books seemed to make of prisons. There were bars in the front but they did not make up the whole front and were more like an extended window into the cell. The other three sides were solid walls and behind a thin drape was a toilet and a small sink, both made from metal and seemingly bolted into the ground and walls respectively. The bed did not seem too comfortable but it was far from the plank he had expected. There was even a table and a chair, also made of metal and securely bolted down. He kicked the chair and the top part slowly spun to the side. Far from what he usually would call comfortable it was still a hell of a lot better than what he had expected.

Time did pass slowly, though, as Yuri figured out waiting in his cell with no company but his own thoughts. It still didn’t register with him how they had actually sentenced Otabek and him to prison when they had not been involved. Besides, if there was one person Yuri knew would never harm anyone without a definite, absolute reason it was Otabek. Beka was he sort of person who rather turned away in dignity when things went south. Yuri himself had been calling him names before he even met him and what had he done? He had turned away and left Yuri dumbfounded.
Thinking of his friend was a bad idea because somehow Yuri felt guilty for him having gotten involved even though the idea was ridiculous. But still they hadn’t been able to actually talk to each other since their arrest and somehow Yuri was afraid that maybe Otabek would blame him or be angry or... he shook his head and hit the pillow with his fist. He knew Otabek and he knew he wouldn’t blame him for something they both had had no control over. They’d be out in no time and then they might even laugh about it in years to come as it wouldn’t be such a great deal anymore. But right now it was...

Someone was knocking on the wall and at first he didn’t even notice until the knocking got louder and more urgent. „Hey, newbie, you there?“

Don’t speak to anyone.

There was no point in answering anyway because Mila was right – those were criminals and Yuri would never associate with the likes of them. It would be stupid at best.

„You mute or what?“ Another voice rambled from the same cell and Yuri thanked god for not having to put up with a cell mate because no matter what it would have led to problems. Putting him a cell by himself was probably the smartest move that had been made concerning him since the start of his trials. The only person he would have been fine with sharing would have been Otabek anyway and obviously they were still keeping them apart. Plus with their momentary situation it likely was for the best not to go one Otabek’s nerves and give him some space. With a huff he let himself sink down into the bed.

„A rude motherfucker that one“, the first voice chimed back in. „Can’t wait to see his pretty face in person.“ A sudden loud rapping on the wall made Yuri jump. „I KNOW YOU HEAR ME, ASSHOLE!“

As suddenly as the rapping and yelling had started it stopped and left Yuri with a racing heart. As far as he knew this was a regular prison but whoever the inmates in the next cell were... at least one of them sounded like an absolute nutcase. Only when he noticed a warden making his round through the cell block, he figured why the man had stopped yelling. The warden stopped at his cell and looked inside and Yuri held his gaze without showing any reaction. After a short moment the man nodded and continued on what Yuri assumed was his patrol. He had no clue as to how much time had passed but he was hungry. Usually he would have called the warden over to demand food but he refrained from it. Drawing attention wasn’t the best idea in a place like this and besides anyone included the wardens. So no matter how much he doubted prison would be like in the movies since he had seen that at least so far it wasn’t, he wasn’t stupid enough to risk anything. With a bit of hunger he could live, especially if it meant he could keep a low profile.

A few minutes later the inmates in the next cell tried talking to him again. He still did not answer because even he could see that talking to criminals was a stupid idea and he had promised not to do anything stupid, even though he had not made the promise out loud.

I like how you tackled Otabek's perspective, it feels really plausible. And the line about Yuri getting ideas makes me want an entire fic of Yuri getting ideas that Otabek suffers for.

Yuri is extremely creative, after all.

It's the off-season. Otabek introduces Yuri to pot - it's not something he does a lot either, but he has access to it via his friends and he doesn't mind it every once in a while, and Yuri was curious, so why not.

They have a great time being high and making out under the stars.
